Abbess Eufemia in the Institution for education of the Catechists of the Holy Metropolis of Corfu
On Monday, February 12, 2018 in the Spiritual Centre a meeting was held for the Institution for education of the Catechists of the Holy Metropolis of Corfu. Main Speaker was the Abbess Eufemia of the Holy Monastery of Pantokrator, in the village of Agios Athanasios (Agros) on the subject of “The will”.
Protopresbyter Father Themistoklis Mourtzanos, General Prelatic Warden of the Holy Metropolis of Corfu addressed the attendants. He conveyed the paternal wishes of his Eminence, the Bishop of Corfu, Paxoi and Diapontian Islands, Mr. Nektarios, welcomed the Abbess Eufemia and emphasized the great importance of the speeches by monks and nuns for the spiritual condition of humans.
In her speech, Abbess Eufemia pointed that both body’s power and movement of the thoughts stem from the will along with every action and every other human thing. The first human, Adam had self-control because his will was like God’s. His integrity was maintained with the Holy Grace and his will and action signified his similarity with God. His growth and education were like God’s. However, when the sin appears, humans do not live like God.
They distant themselves from Him, their faces change and so does the whole humanity. Will forms the face, when it is according to God’s image. Otherwise it weakens it and destroys it. The deterioration of the will is so bad and thus, the first request of Christ to humans is not to ask for their will to be fulfilled, according to Saint Makarios the Egyptian.
Moreover, Abbess Eufemia stressed that the Father finds the form of Son in our faces. Our thoughts and will become Christ. By praying, Christ realizes our will for all the faithful Christians. The ones who struggle spiritually, are invited to let go of their own will and accept God’s which lead to love and sanctification. Above all, it is the ability to obey, to deny the ego and the discipline to follow the spiritual father’s advice and leading.
In her closing, Abbess emphasized the ways through which humans can let go of their own will and search for God’s. This can be accomplished with prayers, humbleness, study of God’s word and obedience to the spiritual father.
