Archieratical Divine Liturgy in Corfu for Saint Spyridon

The memory of Saint Spyridon, Protector of Corfu, was celebrated with great glory, on Wednesday morning, December 12th, 2018 the Divine Liturgy was made in the Holy Church of Saint Spyridon, with his Eminence, the Bishop of Corfu, Paxoi and Diapontian Islands, Mr. Nektarios.

In his preaching, the Bishop of Corfu analysed the phrase from Saint Spyridon’s apolytikion ” and turned the serpent to gold”. Saint Spyridon helped a very poor farmer , who could not repay some money lent to him. With God’s Grace, Saint transformed a serpent to gold, in order for the farmer to use it as collateral. This miracle indicates that with God’s Grace evil can be turned to good.

As it is said, the serpent is associated with Devil and sins. Devil took this form in order to deceive Adam and Eve. Moreover, his Eminence pointed out three kinds of evil in our world. The first one, the natural evil, coming from our fallen nature connected to sickness, sadness, decline and death. The second one is the moral evil, being our choice. Humans on their own decide to move away from God, act conversely to the Divine Will, in order to offend their Creator. Lastly, the third one is the eternal, hell, the permanent separation of humans from God, the spiritual death.

Moreover, Mr. Nektarios underlined that Saint Spyridon won evil through his prayings, internal power, through Christ’s freedom and love, who experienced the overcoming of sin and thirdly through Resurrection. Our Lord keeps Saint Spyridon’s Relic indestructible, giving a clear image of our own Resurrection. Once again, his Eminence sent the message to the ones in power and everyone targeting our homeland, that Greece cannot be without Orthodoxy. In his closing, his Eminence wished a blessed day to all, Saint SPyridon to keep and protect everyone in the Orthodox world.

It shold be noted that during the Divine Liturgy, the Philarmonic Band of Corfu “Saint Spyridon” played songs to honour Him.
