Archieratical Divine Liturgy in the Holy Church of Saint Spyridon

On Tuesday, August 13, 2019 a Divine Liturgy took place in the Holy Church of Saint Spyridon on the occasion of Saint Spyidon’s miracle with his Eminence, the Bishop of Corfu, Paxoi and Diapontian Islands, Mr. Nektarios.

In his sermon, His Eminence analyzed the Apostolic reading of the day, from the Apostle Paul’s letter to the Corinthians, noting that all of us who have been baptized in the name of the Holy Trinity are members of the secret body of Christ, our Church. Just as each member of the human body has different functions to perform, so each believer is called upon to display, if not multiply, the gifts that his Creator has adorned. What the Apostle Paul emphasizes in this letter is the need for unity and mutual help among the members of the Church, “whether one member suffers, one always sympathizes with members, one glorifies one member, always congratulates members.” That means if one member suffers or suffers, the other suffers and suffers, as they constitute the House as a whole. But even when one member is glorified, the rest are glorified accordingly.

In addition, Mr. Nektarios pointed out that the unity of believers, in addition to the Lord’s command, is the manifestation of the Church in the world. The characteristic that distinguishes Orthodox Christians is the bond of love and communion of the Holy Spirit. That is why divisiveness, self-centeredness and nationalist fanaticism arise from selfishness and are unacceptable within our Orthodox Church. At the celebration of the Divine Liturgy, and especially as we approach the Holy Glass, in fear of God, faith and love, to receive the Body and Blood of Christ, we are all brothers and children of Heavenly Father. Right now we are heading to the Kingdom of Heaven.

Moreover, the Bishop of Corfu emphasized that Saint Spyridon is an ecumenical Saint who unites the whole Orthodox world. These days when the Sacred Relic remains open nightly for the faithful to worship the graceful Sanctuary of the Saint, one can see exactly this ecumenical radiation of St. Spyridon, since the pilgrims come from various countries.

Concluding, His Eminence invited the devout believers to guard the unity of our Orthodoxy through the embassies of Saint Spyridon.
