Bishop of Corfu, Mr. Nektarios: Become children of God once again
In the celebrating Holy Church of Saint Nikolaos de Vecchi, his Eminence, the Bishop of Corfu, Paxoi and Diapontian Islands, Mr. Nektarios did the Divine Liturgy on Friday morning, December 6, 2019.
Speaking to the people, Mr Nektarios talked about the Glorifications of the Feast and emphasized that Saint Nicholas was dear to all Christianity because he conceived the meaning of life for man but also had God himself before him. He did not deal with the pettiness of men, but set the purpose of his life by believing that God would take care of him. He was not held by other gods, neither by himself nor by sin.
He emphasized three characteristics of Saint’s personality.
It was a container of pure grace for God. Each of us is a container of God because we have an immortal soul and our soul has the piece of love that is God Himself. Saint Nicholas tried to enlarge this piece and became a container of complete grace. The saint accepted the covenant God made with us. He recognized him as his father and lived this relationship all his life.
He became a witness of God, a witness of Christ. During the period of persecution he was imprisoned and suffered for the love of Christ. But later in his life he fought to show who Christ is, especially at the first Ecumenical Council. He confesses Christ as he really is, not as many people do, that is, by cutting and sewing Him according to our measure.
He worked to become a child of God. He was old in age, but also wise and mediocre. At the same time, he was renewed daily with his fellowship with the Holy God. This exhorts us: “Awake, renew yourself, become children of God, in the time when God is driven out of the hearts of men”!
After the Divine Liturgy, Mr. Nektarios danced at the solemn doctrine at Corfu Naval Station in memory of Saint Nikolaos, in the presence of the local political and military authorities.
