Bishop of Corfu, Mr. Nektarios” Let’s not neglect the gifts given to us by God”

On Monday, July 8, 2019, his Eminence, the Bishop of Corfu, Paxoi and Diapontian Islands, Mr. Nektarios did the Divine Liturgy in the celebrating Church of Saint Prokopios, in the villafe with the same name.

In his speech, His Eminence analyzed the Apostolic passage of the day, emphasizing two Apostle Paul’s invitations to his disciple Timothy. The Apostle of the Nations stresses first that one should not ignore Timothy’s youth and his zeal for the Lord and secondly Timothy himself should not neglect his gifts. This passage is related to the celebrated Saint Martyr Procopius, who was young and did not neglect, but instead showed the gifts that the Lord had given him. Neanias, as she was called at the beginning, was a Roman army officer in Alexandria, Egypt. At some point he was ordered to attack the Christians. But on the road, just as with the Apostle Paul, the Lord appeared with the Holy Cross and asked him why he was persecuting him. Immediately Nanania repented and received from Christ the name Procopius. Faith and love for Jesus Christ was so strong in the heart of St. Prokopios that even the horrific torture they were subjected to did not bend him. He boldly confessed to the Triune God and refused to sacrifice to idols. This has resulted in witnessing his spirit beheaded.

The Bishop of Corfu also pointed out that our time is very similar to that of Saint Prokopios. And today the persecutors of Christ are many and impose on our whole society, any perversion and anomaly the human mind can give birth to, while simultaneously pursuing self-promotion and self-sacrifice (neo-patriotism). Everyone is free, even if they do not believe in God. But it has no right to vote against laws or to embarrass and undermine the faith of the Orthodox Greeks who are the overwhelming majority of our people. What we need on our part is not to neglect the great gift given to us and is no more than faith in the true God.

In closing, Mr. Nektarios asked the faithful to arm themselves with a spirit of bravery and resistance against temptation and sin, through the embassies of the Saint.
