Bishop of Corfu, Mr. Nektarios: Saint Spyridon shows us three ways to God
The three-day Saint Spiridon celebration in Corfu began with great brilliance and with the participation of a large crowd, where its indestructible relic is preserved.
The commencement of the festive three-day celebration was, according to custom, the Appeal to Saint Spyridon by the Metropolitan of Corfu, Mr. Nektarios, and the departure of the Sacred Scripture from the shrine, so as to be placed “upright” at the door. He continued uninterrupted pilgrimage throughout the day.
In the evening of the celebration that took place on the afternoon of December 11, 2019, the Eminence, Bishop of Corfu, Paxos and the Diapontian Islands, Mr. Nektarios , who in his speech pointed out that Saint Spyridon shows us three ways.
The first is to follow Christ’s word in the blessings: Blessed are the hearts that look to this God. Gentleness is the experience of the Holy Spirit. It means kindness, accepting the other person as he is, that is, the image of God. This makes the saint open to people’s requests. He doesn’t look at their lives, but he feels at home. And kindness brings change to people. The world is not changed by violence, by coercion, by force, by power. The world is changing with kindness. The other is exemplary. But even if he does not want to change within him, the saint has made his debt to God and to his neighbor, essentially not allowing the world to have an excuse if he turned away from God.
The second path is the integrity, transcendence transcendence, and the bipolarity of the times. To be whole, we need a ruler. Our minds to seek the will of God behind every circumstance and to fulfill the will of God through prayer, alms, love. This path was studied by the Saint not in secular knowledge but in the university of empirical theology, of spiritual life. Our world today is divided. Sometimes he wants to follow the path of God. Sometimes, however, our minds turn to the cosmic, resulting in a mind that wants everything its own. It goes with both God and Mammon. And he sees the circumstances of life in the interest of the temporal and that he wants for God to serve our interests. But this way we cannot move forward because we do not have a steady course, but we live in confusion.
The third way is simplicity. It’s about knowing our limits. Our life was given as a time, an opportunity to get to know God. And the road is simple. It goes through the Church and its way. The Church brings us to God in communion with Him. The Church brings us closer, so it does not leave us alone. The Church gives us answers to our questions. The Church reveals the lies of this world, mainly that the knowledge of science, of this world, is enough and we do not need the Theology. The Church shows us that holiness is the true ornament that conquers death. And our saint comes to the resurrection, and we see this in the abomination of his body.
The Bishop of Corfu closed his thoughts with the following: “Live the divine presence with humility, integrity and simplicity to enlighten you by the grace of God! Through the action of the Church we can experience Theology! In the age of hatred, malice, friendship, alienation, rationality we want signs of the presence of God, but we do not see them because our mind does not follow these three paths! Saint Spyridon is the living point before us! Let’s follow him and become our helper both for everyone and for our homeland that is in danger again! ”
Today, Wednesday, the 12th of December, the Divine Liturgy, will be made by His Eminence the Bishop Nektarios of Corfu.
