Bishop of Corfu, Mr. Nektarios: “We as Orthodox must keep our unity as we keep our eyes.”
On Thursday afternoon, 31 January 2019, his Eminence, the Bishop of Corfu, Paxoi and Diapontian Islands, Mr. Nektarios, blessed and cut off the New Year’s cake on the charity food queue of the Holy metropolis of Corfu “THE EYOSIOS ARTOS”, in the parish of the Holy Three Martyrs in Anemomylos.
In the greeting addressed by the Bishop of Corfu, he referred to the needs of people who are growing, due to the severe economic crisis. This crisis, as has been pointed out over and over again, is unfortunately not only economic but mainly spiritual. The modern human was voluntarily alienated from Christ, believing that only with his own forces he would complete himself as a personality. When a man serves his material needs and lives in financial prosperity he forgets God. But if these needs can no longer be satisfied for a variety of reasons, then he can make a living in his soul and return to God. An example of this man’s behavior is the Greek, who in the past few decades enjoyed the goods that the western world offered richly. Now that foreigners are asking for the many things that they gave to our country in previous years, the Greek returns to the Church and recognizes the value of the Orthodox Faith.
In addition, his Eminence pointed out that our country has been targeted by both domestic and foreign decision-makers in the context of the more general design of globalization for the imposition of the New Order of Things. Everyday we witness the warfare that the Church receives, our history, our culture, and our culture. One of the goals of globalization is the abolition of nation states and their replacement by supranational organizations. These designs are abusive and contrary, because the Lord himself has set boundaries among the nations in order not to overwhelm the confusion in the world.
Then his Eminence thanked deeply the priests as well as the volunteers, who daily serve our needy brothers. The local Church, from the very first moment, was found next to our inbred brothers, offering not only material support, but above all the spiritual, with the prayer of our own Bishop and the other members of our Church, as well as community prayer at the Divine Operation, where we all become a Body with the head of our Lord.
In closing, Mr. Nektarios emphasized that we Orthodox must keep our unity as the eyebrow of an eye, unity in our Church, unity in our homeland.
Lastly, the Holy Metropolis of Corfu, Paxoi and Diapontian Islands is still operating two food charity queues, in the parish of Saint Eleftherios and V.M. Mandrakina and the parish of Saint Ioannis Lazos in Manduki.
