Bishop of Corfu, Mr. Nektarios: We need the Church to find cure
On Sunday morning, November 10, 2019, his Eminence, the Bishop of Corfu, Paxoi and Diapontian Islands, Mr. Nektarios did the Divine Liturgy in the Holy Church of Saint Spyridon the Wonderworker.
Speaking to the Church, the Bishop of Corfu referred to the gospel of good Samaritan that was read in the temples this Sunday. He pointed out that the lawyer of the gospel passage approached Christ with an ironic disposition, being a young man, which is still the case today. Many young people, while having a search mood, treat their faith with an ironic glance. Christ sets the example for all. Ignoring the young man’s style, he answers the essence of his question.
The parable of the good Samaritan represents our lives. There are those who are not interested in human salvation. There are bandits who represent temptation, which deeply injures man, demonizing him and taking him out of the Lord’s way. Robberies, wars on humanity capture the trauma of temptation over the centuries, but also in our time.
The stranger, the Samaritan, is Jesus Christ, who came to a wounded and deceased humanity, in which there were no graces of condolences, neither by the representatives of the religions nor by the prominent ones. And Christ, after healing the wounds of the injured man, takes him to the Inn, which is the Church, and heals him. The oil is the point of the cross in the sacraments that sanctify us, it is the baptismal oil that brings us into the Church, it is the oil of grace that heals sins, it is the love that sanctifies us, and the wine is the Blood of Christ His sacrifice rescues us from temptation! The Lord will come back and pay back every fight, every effort to heal from the wounds of temptation and the people who are ruthless.
It is a day of reflection on our relationship with Christ, on our relationship with the Church, on our aversion to temptation on the day of the Good Samaritan Gospel, a day of returning to the authentic relationship with Christ!
At the end of the Divine Liturgy, His Eminence dedicated the annual memorial service for the rest of the soul of the musicians of the Mantzaros Philharmonic.
