Bishop of Corfu, Mr. Nektarios: We should find the real meaning of Freedom

On Friday morning, November 8, 2019, his Eminence, the Bishop of Corfu, Paxoi and Diapontian Islands, Mr. Nektarios did the Divine Liturgy in the celebrating Church of the Archangels in the village Episkopiana.

Addressing the people of God, Mr. Nektarios emphasized that the Feast of the Holy Angels is the feast of the invisible operating spirits, of the pre-material worlds of God’s creations that were revealed both in the Old and New Testaments. Each person has his guardian angel, invokes him in his prayer and in the liturgical prayers of the Church. The archangels as sent by God, manifest the will of God, do miracles by saving people. The angelic forces are persons. The purpose of persons is sanctification, likeness to God. And sanctification comes with the transcendence of pride, of calculations, of every sinful, separating power of God.

The devil was one of the angelic forces. Like all persons, he had the gift of freedom from God. But God, as a Father, gives directions to the persons He created, angels and humans, without committing. The angelic powers are aware of the work that God created for them. They are laws, they have thought, they have a decision, they have freedom. They are functional spirits, they embody God and the creation that God created. The devil and the demons misused freedom. They rebelled against God and fell out of His will. They wanted to become gods, without imitating God. “Look like me,” God says, in love that has no boundaries, which is sacrificial rather than opportunistic. The devil loves no other than himself and so breaks into people. So he threatens to make us his slaves, to destroy us. When we misuse our freedom, when we disconnect it from God and love, when we make ourselves god, then we depart from the angelic path.

So let us remember that God created us out of love and lovingly wants us to walk. Our working forces remind us of the work of our salvation, which is the will of God. To open our mind, our heart, our soul, to understand the greatness of the deity. And let us rediscover the true meaning of freedom which is obedience to God’s will!
