Bishop of Corfu, Mr. Nektarios: “Zaccheus had Christ in his heart”.
On Sunday, January 27, 2019, the Bishop of Corfu, Paxoi and the Diapontian Islands, Mr. Nektarios, did the Divine Liturgy in the Holy Church of Virgin Mary the Kassiopia, in the village of Chlomotiana.
In his sermon, his Eminence analyzed the Gospel’s reading of the day, stressing that Zacchaeus had overcome two obstacles in order to meet the Lord. The first obstacle was his low stature, so he climbed to Fig tree and the second difficulty was his occupation, as he was a money curator and hateful to the people. Nevertheless, Zacchaeus acknowledged his sinfulness and confessed to Christ, promising that he would return to those the money at the fourfold sum. Zacchaeus had the great blessing to host the Lord in his intimacy. The fact that it is worth underlining is that Zaccheus had Christ in his heart and that his zeal was so great that he overcame all the obstacles.
Referring to our time, the Bishop of Corfu pointed out that as Orthodox Christians we must fight spiritually daily and with the grace of God to overcome the obstacles of the wicked. For the salvation of our country we need repentance and faith from our people. Even though we are saddened and hurt by our hearts with all that is presumed and with the sell off of our Macedonia, we need never to lose our hope to Christ. God is with us, no one for us. As the late Archbishop Christodoulos, who had warned many years ago, said, for all that we have tragically experienced today, the enemies of the Nation bet exactly to the fear of our people. That is why we need resistance and struggle.
Furthermore, Mr. Nektarios expressed his great joy in the village of Chlomotiana, from which his Eminence the Bishop of Nazareth, Kyriakos, comes from.
Concluding, his Eminence asked the faithful to resemble the Zacchaeus and to bring those Christ into their hearts.
