Blessing and Cutting of the New Year’s Vassilopita (Greek Cake) of Students and Scientists’ Society of the Holy Metropolis of Corfu
On Thursday evening, January 25, 2018, in the spiritual Centre (Akadimias 2) the meetings of Students and Scientists’ society continued. They are organized by the Holy Metropolis for the fifteenth consecutive year. The main topic of the Winter Semester is the following: “Atheism and Faith: starting from ancient Greece to Christianity”. The fourteenth meeting was devoted to Saint Dionysius the Areopagite and his work “On Divine Names”.
The basis for this meeting, which was presented by the responsible, Protopresbyter Father Themistoklis Mourtzanos, General Prelatic Warden of the Holy Metropolis, was a series of names given by the author to God. He names Him: “Saint above all Saints, King of Kings, Lord above all Lords and God of Gods.” Through these names, the truths of our Faith are revealed, as far as the Ternary God is concerned;
He is a Saint above all Saints, he is not contaminated. He is King of Kings, he owns every part of this world and he becomes the reference point of all. Because of Him, everything takes value and meaning. When they communicate with Him, people acquire their personality as beings through the relationship with Him and the others, while finding the meaning of our life for our existence through our differences. Without God, there is no order in this world. He is our Lord and our Beloved who wants us to be His children, His family. Lastly, God is the One to take care and provides everything while keeping everything that is part of His providence.
These elements prove once again that the God of our faith has nothing to do with what the atheists of our time believe Him to be, a ruler, a fanatic and damaging for humans and society. He is a God of love, meaning and joy… God wants us to have our own face, to communicate with Him in the Church and to share the life and the love with all. Thus, with Him as the source of life and reference, we can find the road to eternity, life and resurrection, especially during the times of substitutes, such as the deification of science, pleasure or our own selves.
Then the Vassilopita was cut and blessed by the representative of his Eminence, the Bishop of Corfu, Mr. Nektarios who could not be present, although planned, because of the sudden meeting of the Permanent Holy Synod for the matter of the Skopje.
Archimandrite- Preacher father Seraphim Linosporis conveyed the paternal wishes of the Bishop and encouraged younger and older people, students and scientists to keep the joy of the faith as a precious gift of life.
Then, a musical evening with traditional music by the First Chanter George Ladovrechis and his colleagues followed, while food was provided by the parishes of Saint Eleftherios and Saint John Lazos.
The next meeting will be held on Wednesday, January 31st, 2018 at 9.15 p.m. with an interesting dialogue between theology and literature. The books of Irvin Yalom “Staring at the Sun. Overcoming the Terror of Death” and Albert Camus “L’ etranger” will be presented.
Participation is free.
