Celebrating Saint Arsenios in the Holy Metropolis of Corfu
On Saturday morning, January 19, 2019, the Matin and the Divine Liturgy took place at the celebrating Holy Church of Saint Arsenios in Lefkimmi, with his Eminence, the Bishop of Vrestheni, Mr. Theoklitos, after the invitation of his Eminence, the Bishop of Corfu, Paxoi and Diapontian Islands, Mr. Nektarios who is in Jerusalem, with many worshippers of the Holy Metropolis of Corfu.
In his preaching, the Bishop of Vrestheni noted that while studying the life and the Service of Saint Arsenios, Arcbishop of Corfu, one notices two important elements. Firstly, Saint Arsenios was a really skillful and wise Archpriest. He was a man who lived with his flock but also was able to listen to the difficulties and sadness of the Corfiots, thus becoming protector of the orphans and poor. Likewise, a bishop should be, father and protector of the souls that Christ has trusted him with, The second element is his life, the sacrificial element for the protection of his people. When a sneaky administrator falsely accused the Corfiots of disturbing the social life of the island, the Emperor of Constantinople seriously reacted. Saint Arsenios, albeit his age, took the initiative and travelled to Constantinople in order to tell the truth and reveal the lies and injustice. There, he stood in front of Konstantinos the 7th (945-959), defending his flock. During his return, in the winter, Saint Arsenios got sick being close to Skyros and Corinth and thus, he surrendered his soul to Christ. He was buried there, but after his wish, he was transferred to Corfu, being a source of many miracles for the local people.
Moreover, his Eminence told the people that they should be proud since many Saints and miracles have come from Corfu, which is an island not only of natural but also of spiritual beauty.
In his closing, his Eminence the Bishop of Vrestheni wished to his Eminence, the Bishop of Corfu and the local people to be blessed by Saint Arsenios and God’s Grae.
It should be noted that on Friday evening, a litany of Saint Arsenios’s relic took place.
Then the panegyrical Vesper was made with his Eminence, the Bishop of Vrestheni Mr. Theoklitos and the Choir of the Ecclesiastical Music School of the Holy Metropolis of Corfu “Saint Arsenios”, under the direction of father Nektarios Bokos.
