Celebrating Saint Nikolaos in the Holy Metropolis of Corfu
With great honor was celebrated in the Holy Metropolis of Corfu, the memory of Saint Nikolaos, on Thursday morning, December 6, 2018, where the Divine Liturgy was made in the celebrating historical church of Saint Nikolaos de Vecchi, with his Eminence the Bishop of Corfu, Paxoi, and Diapontian Islands, Mr. Nektarios. Mr. Nektarios in his speech to the faithful, praised the personality of Saint Nikolaos, characterising him as the Light and the Holder of our Orthodox Faith. Saint Nikolaos taught us the given by our Lord truth, being with his life and spiritual fights against the heresies an example to imitate. He was not only a spiritual leader, in Asia Minor, where he was Bishop, but also for the rest of the Orthodox world. He ratified the word of truth by taking part in the First Ecumenical Council of Nicaea in 325, together with Saint Spyridon, giving us the Symbol of Faith. He was a true father, a patron of his flock, the president of the people of Myron, ie he was present before the authorities and powers. He was also a simple teacher, keeping the Orthodox faith pure and indomitable in other words.
And finally, St. Nicholas was an indispensable pole of Christ’s truth, without making any rebate, in order to be liked by the power and environments of the ruling order of his time. Furthermore, the Bishop of Corfu emphasized that today we need spiritual fathers, similar to Saint Nicholas, who will be distinguished by the purity of their hearts, the love for Christ and ecclesiastical ethos. Our people want their Church near them. This people, together with the holy clergy and head of the Lord, are the secret Body of Christ.
Those who are striving to break the bond of the Greeks with the Orthodox faith and are seeking the religious discoloration of our homeland are planted and abused. Orthodoxy and Greece are identical values. Let those who fight our homeland, both inside and outside the country, be well in mind.
In closing his Eminence wished Saint Nikolaos to give to every human His Grace and to intercede on the throne of the Lord for the salvation of all of us. It should be noted that on Wednesday afternoon, December 5, 2018, his Eminence did the panegyrical Vesper and did the preaching in the celebrating Church of Saint Nikolaos in Katomeri village.
