Bishop of Corfu: “Christians need to be merciful”

On Sunday, September 30, 2018 the Matin and the Divine Liturgy were made in the Metropolitan Church of Virgin Mary the Spilaiotissa.

In his speech, his Eminence, the Bishop of Corfu, Paxoi and Diapontian Islands, Mr Nektarios analysed the Gospel’s Reading of the Day, underlining the importance of the so-called gold rule of our Lord: “Do to others as you would have them do to you.” Since the beginning of human history, the need to establish laws was obvious in order to help human societies live in an organized way.

These laws, however, were and continue to be unfair for particular parts of the societies, which continue to resist their application. Then, people become divided. If the incitements of the Holy Bible, the alive word of God were kept, as the Fathers of our Church mention, then the reasons of existing worldly laws would be no longer necessary. On the contrary, there are voices claiming that what is written in the Holy Bible cannot be implemented.

Our Saints prove to us that not only is the Divine Law applicable, but also through which humans are transformed and completed with Jesus Christ’s power.

Moreover, the Bishop of Corfu pointed out Christ’s speech: “Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.” In this speech, our Lord invites Christians to go beyond the ordinary and become merciful, imitating their heavenly Father. In other words, the loyal Christian is invited to make him/herself new, to love from the bottom of his/her heart both God and his/her fellow people, to be merciful, even to his enemies, praying firstly for them, becoming in the end almoner.

In his closing, Mr. Nektarios invited the loyal Christians to follow the small gate and the narrow road that leads to life, salvation and divinification.
