Episcopal Vesper for Saint Nikolaos in the Holy Metropolis of Corfu
On Tuesday afternoon, December 5, 2017, the Episcopal Vesper took place for the celebration of Saint Nikolaos in the church of Saint Nikolaos in Kanalia with his Eminence, the Bishop of Corfu, Paxoi and Diapontian Islands, mr. Nektarios.
In his preaching, his Eminence analyzed the words of the holy singer of hymns, who mentions three elements that characterize Saint Nikolaos. Firstly, he was opposed to impiety and supported piety.
Impiety indicates the human audacity which distort human qualities and make them put God away. On the other side, piety is not external and is associated with the heart of humans, springing from the mental world of each one. Secondly, Saint Nikolaos is one of the leaders of our Church. As a hierarch and spiritual father, he was at the forefront of all the spiritual struggles and good works, with the most important being the one of people’s salvation.
The Bishop’s responsibility is to present the truth of the Orthodox Faith to humans, that is, to be the guarantor of the Faith. Thirdly, Saint Nikolaos fought the heresy of Arius by participating in the First Ecumenical Synod at Nicaea along with Saint Spyridon.
It is our responsibility today, continued the Bishop of Corfu, to stand tall and resist to the numerous heresies and the attempt to alter the Orthodox Beliefs of our people. In every case, it is a prerequisite for the loyal Christians to remain faithful and obedient to the Church.
In his closing, mr. Nektarios asked from the loyal Christians to imitate all the elements of Saint Nikolaos’ personality, in order for everyone to build their own personality, with faith and love to Jesus Christ.
During the Vesper, his Eminence ordained father Panagiotis Kemetzopoulos as a Protopresbyter and mr. Spyridon Tsiolis as a Reader.
