First Divine Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts in the Holy Metropolis of Corfu

With the according humbleness, the first Divine Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts was made in the Holy Metropolis of Corfu, on Wednesday, March 13, 2019, with his Eminence, the Bishop of Corfu, Paxoi and Diapontian Islands, at the Holy Church of Saint Spyridon the Wonderworker.

In his preaching the Bishop of Corfu, taking on the biblical reading of the day, specifically from the book of Proverbs, pointed out that the spirit of God comes and appeals to us, telling us that if we can understand our position with regard to God, then we will we have taken the wisdom of Him. Without the wisdom of the Lord, our lives are unnecessary. Our spiritual struggle is precisely to know God through His wisdom. Besides, He Himself in the Proverbs says that through His own wisdom humans will acquire godhood. They will understand who God is and what man’s relationship with their Creator. When we acquire God’s wisdom, then we will know ourselves. Today we all believe that we have succeeded in recognizing our will, our thinking, ourselves. But we are deluded, because when humans reach a spiritual quench, they resort to other methods, coming largely from the East, such as yoga, the so-called self-improvement methods and other demonic fallacies that all fit into this “New Age” stream.

In addition, his Eminence emphasized that in the Book of Proverbs the Lord urges us to have good will, a good will to lift all these spiritual levels, in order to approach God on the one hand and to check ourselves.

On the other hand, Mr. Nektarios stressed that Christ characterizes us based on His love, His mercy and His knowledge. This knowledge is recommended to us by Saint Paul, not the secular knowledge, but God’s knowledge. When we are aware of the Divine presence, the course of our lives is useful, not only for us personally, but also for our society.

In his closing, the Bishop of Corfu noted that during the period of the Holy and Great Lent, we are called to turn inward, in our heart and cultivate it. Then we will discover our limits, our bad thoughts and actions, our evils, which are in no way consistent with the presence of the Lord in our lives. That is why we need to become all our seekers of the mercy of God and strive at the stage of virtues that has just begun, with the grace of Christ.
