Holy Epiphany in the Holy Metropolis of Corfu

Holy Epiphany in the Holy Metropolis of Corfu

On Sunday morning, January 6, 2019, the Matin, the Divine Liturgy of Saint Vasileios and the Great Blessing of the Waters were made with the proper magnificence at the Metropolitan Church of Virgin Mary the Spilaiotissa, with his Eminence, the Bishop of Corfu, Paxoi and Diapontian Islands, Mr. Nektarios. There were also political and military authorities of the island.

In his preaching, the Bishop of Corfu analysed the following hymn of the Epiphany: “Wishing to fulfill what You ordained from the ages, O Lord, from all creation You accepted ministers of Your mystery, from the Angels You took Gabriel, from humankind you took the Virgin, from the heavens You took the star, from the waters You took the Jordan, in which You washed away the sin of the world. O our Savior, glory to You!”. With the Incarnation of Son and Word, the plan of God for the human salvation is fulfilled.

From the angelic powers, the Archangel Gabriel undertakes to announce the good news about our salvation in the Most Holy Theotokos, during the Annunciation of Theotokos. The human race offers to God’s plan the Lady Virgin Mary, where in her viscus , the Creator of the universe becomes man. The heavens offer the star conducting the wise sorcerers from the East in order to worship the born Savior. And the waters give the Jordan River. The baptism of the Lord cleanses both the human race and the entire creation, which is being renovated. Although Christ was sinless, with extreme humiliation, accepts to be baptized in the Jordan River by Saint John the Forunner, giving us the ultimate example of humiliation and obedience to the will of the Father.

In addition, his Eminence emphasized that what is lacking in our time is the spirit of humiliation. On the contrary, the element that dominates our times is selfishness and pride. When humans are in the passionate, sinful condition, they deliberately put away the Divine Grace and choose to live in the dark.

In conclusion, Mr. Nektarios wished the faithful the Light and Grace of the baptized Lord to lead  them in  their lives.
After the Great Blessing of the Waters, according to Corfiot customs, Cleric and people moved in procession to the old port, where the Blessing of the waters was performed by his Eminence.
