On Sunday morning, February 9. 2020, his Eminence the Bishop of Corfu, Paxoi and Diapontian Islands, Mr. Nektarios did the Divine Liturgy in the Holy Church of Saint Ioannis the Prodromus in Vouniatades.
Speaking to the faithful, the Bishop of Corfu emphasized that the Triodion is a period of self-knowledge, purity, prayer, meeting with the Risen Christ. We need repentance to live our salvation through the overcoming of death and the hope of resurrection. To do this we are called to turn to ourselves, to live the inner life, the spiritual life, to communicate reason with both our fellow humans and with God. It is not a time of revelry and feasting, but a time of returning to God.
The Sunday of the Publican and of the Pharisee shows us that the emphasis of the ego, the demonstration, the condemnation of others makes God reject us. The Publican was an expression of worldly thought, sin, and injustice, but humility, the search for God’s mercy justify it. The publican had self-knowledge. And self-knowledge leads him to regain fellowship with God and fellow man. We are uniting him with the Church as the body of Christ, because it helps him to realize his mistakes, and through silence, removing himself from the show is finding his way again.
At the same time, his prayer is proof not of necessity but of acknowledgment of our mistakes. We are not allowed to say to God “why?”, But to be aware of our sins and seek the path of grace, which is the greatest gift we can receive!
Mr Nektarios expressed the joy of the families’ presence in the village and called for the new parish priest to be supported and for everyone to join in the path of love, unity and community.
