Bishop of Corfu, Mr. Nektarios : “Many people today prefer traitors like Varavvas and take Christ out of their lives”
On Holy Friday’s morning, April 26, 2019, his Eminence, the Bishop of Corfu, Paxoi and Diapontian Islands, Mr. Nektarios did the service of the Royal Hours and the Vesper of the removal of the Body of Christ from the Cross in the Metropolitan Church of Virgin Mary the Spilaiotissa.
In his preaching, the Bishop of Corfu analysed the question that Pilatos made to the Jewish Crowd: “Who you want me to discharge? Varavvas or Jesus, the so-called Christ?”. Pilatos knew already that they handed Christ in by jealousy. The Roman ruler had already been informed about the admired face of Jesus Christ. Firstly, Pilatos did not dare to free Christ, albeit his position. On the other had, people, who had been so blessed by Christ, was persuaded by the demagogues, the archpriests and the Pharisees.
Secondly, no faithful Christian cannot be deeply moved and admire the Divine condescension, the forgiveness and the greatness of our Lord along with, the complain of Whom as described in the Matin of Holy Friday: “O my people, what have I done to thee and how hast thou repaid me? Instead of manna, gall, Instead of water, vinegar, instead of loving me, thou hast nailed me to the Cross, I can endure no more; ”. The Only Son and Word of God forgives the ones who crucified Him, begging His Heavenly father to not count this sin.
Thirdly, Jesus Christ is lead to Crucifixion and Varavvas is freed. People have been wondering for two thousand years who is responsible for the death of Christ. Is it Pilatos who was not worthy of his office and was afraid of the crowd? Are the archpriests and the Pharisees? Our Lord was sacrified with His own will on the Cross for our own salvation. This does not excludes all those who had planned to kill Christ. His Eminence referring to the modern people, underlined that many prefer traitors like Varavvas and take Christ out of their lives. After all this kind of people, have the possibility of silencing their consciences. These new traitors are the global rulers and they aim at erasing Christianity from this world. They have corrupted the young ones and they lead people to spiritual disaster. The greatest obstacle to complete their evil plans is Christ. They try in vain. Christ is alive.
Concluding, Mr. Nektarios called on the faithful to turn their hearts to the Crucified Lord and to recognize their mistakes, making their self-criticism. Though we are all sinners and we constantly make our Lord sad, we eventually resort to Him asking for His rich mercy, said the Eminence
