Our Heavenly Father awaits our return

Bishop of Corfu, Mr. Nektarios: “Our Heavenly Father awaits our return.”

On Sunday, February 4, 2018, his Eminence, the Bishop of Corfu, Paxoi and Diapontian Islands, Mr. Nektarios did the Divine Liturgy in the Church of Saints Three Martyrs in Garitsa.

In his preaching, the Bishop of Corfu analyzed both the Gospel Reading and the Epistle reading of the day. As far as the Gospel reading is concerned, it is worth stressing that the Father of the parable, when seeing his son repentant returning, he neither asked him why he left, nor asked him to apologize. Listening only to the son’s cry “father”, he hugged him and kissed him.

This scene indicates us the relationship that humans have with their Creator. Humans sense their sinfulness and how much sadness they have provoked to God and thus, they return to Him. The Heavenly Father awaits our return. As long as we recognize Him as our Father and feel sorry for our sins. In the Orthodox Church, the relationship between God and Humans is not lawful or judgmental. It is a relationship between father and children. The purpose of regret is not the punishment of sins but the ontological of humans and the forming of a love relationship with Christ.

As far as the Epistle reading is concerned, his Eminence pointed out that Apostle Paul show us the way through which the aforementioned love relationship between God and humans can be accomplished. Therefore, the only way is by preserving both the soul and the body, since the latter is a temple of the Holy Spirit. Under any circumstance, have humans the right to use their bodies to do actions opposing to Christ. Just like in a living organism, the same happens in the Body of Church. Nobody has the right to contaminate it.

Moreover, the Bishop of Corfu using as a basis the nationwide demonstration in Athens, underlined the fact that Greeks go out in the streets because the devious foreign centers in cooperation with the local ones try to eliminate the faith, the patriotism, the history and the culture of this peoples by distorting and creating lies just like the inspirer and creator of all these opposite plans, the father of lies.

Jesus Christ, however, will not abandon us as long as we repent and return to Him, our only hope and strength, mentioned Mr. Nektarios in his closing.

By the end of the Divine Liturgy, his Eminence ordained Reader Mr. Christodoulos Pandis, Theologian –Professor.
