Our post-modern era: virtual culture, identity, religiosity

“Our post-modern era: virtual culture, identity, religiosity”

On the occasion of the Orthodox Christian Book Exhibition of the Holy Metropolis of Corfu in collaboration with EN PLO publications, an event took place on Wednesday afternoon, March 14, 2018, in the Spiritual Centre on the following subject: “Our post-modern era: virtual culture, identity, religiosity” based on the book: “A post-modern Requiem- issues of European Philosophy, Art and politics” of Mr. Nikos Papadimitriou, Professor at the Ionian University (Gutenberg Publications).

The conversation was between Protopresbyter Father Themistoklis Mourtzanos, General Prelatic Warden of the Holy Metropolis of Corfu and two students of the Ionian University, Anastasia and George.

It was argued that in the modern reality, Europe is undergoing a crisis because it has been left in the statics of time, as has our culture in general, since we have lost our sociability, we have stopped smiling and sharing things. Basically today, virtual reality has swallowed us through smartphones and social media, making us passive receivers.

Unfortunately we have reached the point even in our entertainment, where pleasure has turned into passive rather than a dynamic habit.

Creative spontaneity of people has been limited to the climate of our times. This is why, a new approach of all these positions, through collectivities such as the Church, with its parishes, the university and even politics that will inspire and not just manage everything, is necessary.

Modern humans can be manageable, yet with unity and optimism they will advance ahead facing any challenges.

The book exhibition runs daily from 10 am to 2 pm and 5.30 pm to 8.30 pm.
