Sin equals with betrayal against God

Bishop of Corfu, Mr. Nektarios: “Sin equals with betrayal against God.”

On Holy Wednesday’s evening, April 4, 2018, his Eminence, the Bishop of Corfu, Paxoi and Diapontian Islands, Mr. Nektarios did the service of Nipter (Washing of the Feet) in the Holy Church of All Saints.
In his preaching, the Bishop of Corfu insisted on the meaning of betrayal of our Lord, by Judas Iscariot, who belonged in the closed circle of Disciples. Devil took Judas’ heart, as mentioned, both in the Holy Gospel and the hymnology of Holy Thursday’s Matin.

This Disciple was not “fortified” spiritually, because only superficially he had been attached to his Master, but internally he had his selfishness and own will. Under these condition, temptation naturally found fertile ground, ultimately leading Judas into betrayal. However, we are not different with the traitor Disciple, when we live in this passionate state, since sin equals with betrayal against God.

On the other hand, his Eminence continued, the one who resisted the betrayal of Judas, was Peter. Christ prophesied to Peter that on that night, anyone who would be strong in faith would be with Him. Even though Peter would have refused the Lord three times, Christ prayed to His Father so that Peter would take strength and strengthen his remaining brothers in faith, during that time of the Suffering.

Lord knew that Peter was a strong character. Within the Church of Christ there are those who are strong in character and faith. But there are also those who are vulnerable to temptation and sin. Jesus Christ asks for solid, strong faith and the strong one, that is, who stands even after temptations and falls on the faith of God, should support his/her weak siblings.

This must be done within our Church and within the Body of Christ, and not those who have more faith, to be confined to themselves, showing at the same time an indulgent behavior for the others, but to live collectively. If we do not cooperate in faith and in the spiritual struggle, then our dissolution will quickly happen.

In his closing, Mr. Nektarios called the believers into unity, through faith, so that by spiritually struggling, they will unite with Jesus Christ.

Before the Service of the Nipter, his Eminence did the Service of the Holy Unction in the Metropolitan Church of Virgin Mary the Spilaiotissa, with the participation of many people.
