Sunday of the Samaritan Woman in the Holy Metropolis of Corfu
On Sunday, May 26th, 2019, his Eminence, the Bishop of Corfu, Paxoi and Diapontian Islands, Mr. Nektarios did the Divine Liturgy in the Holy Church of the Assumption, in Mamaloi.
In his preaching, the Bishop of Corfu analysed the Gospel’s reading of the day, and in particular the dialogue between Christ and the Samaritan Woman.e was wearied from the journey and the heat, and He sat down at this well. After a little while the Samaritan woman mentioned in today’s Gospel passage came to draw water. We can underline three elements in this meeting of Christ with the Samaritan Woman.
First, Christ asks for water to drink. For a while, the Samaritan Woman resisted and asked how it is possible for a Jew to ask water from a Samaritan, as there was already a hatred between the Jews and the Samaritans. Christ tells her that if she really knows Who asks her for water, then she would ask for the water to live and she would not be thirsty again. This living water is the Son and Word of God, the giver and the source of our life, which if settled in the soul and in the heart of man, then it is transformed from the life of sin and corruption into real life and experiencing it The Divine condition.
Secondly, the Samaritan Woman questions the Lord about the place where God should be worshiped, on Mount Garizin or on the Temple of Jerusalem, as the Jews believed? Jesus said to her that “God’s glory, and by worshiping them in spirit and truth, they do not worship.” These words mean that worshiping and seeking God only physically does not delight in Himself. On the contrary, when we ask Him for a heart, then Christ is revealed to us. In addition, we need to worship God in truth, that is, to have true knowledge of His presence.
And thirdly, when the Lord revealed the earlier life of Samaritan Woman, she confessed that Christ is a prophet. When Jesus was asked about the Messiah, then He revealed that Himself was the expected Messiah. This means that Christ is not revealed to the “pure” Pharisees and cold-hearted people, but to those who have a pure heart and acknowledge their sinfulness.
In his Closing, his Eminence wished to the loyal people to be blessed by the Light of the Resurrection.
