The Akathist Hymn in Corfu
On Friday afternoon, March 23,2018, his Eminence, the Bishop of Corfu, Paxoi and Diapontian Islands, Mr. Nektarios did the Service of the Akathist Hymn in 5he Holy Church of Saint Spyridon the Wonderworker and then in the Holy Church of Virgin Mary the Spilaiotissa.
In his preaching, his Eminence commented on the verse of the Akathist Hymn: “ Fraught within with confusion, brought about by doubtful thoughts, the wise Joseph was troubled” noting that for human brains, the Mystery of Divine Incarnation is impossible to be understood. Even more, when the humble daughter of Nazareth conceived the Divine Word without a man’s participation. After God’s intervention, an Archangel appeared to Joseph and revealed that Virgin Mary is pregnant because of the Holy Spirit’s grace. We worship our Virgin Mary, we thank Her for her many aids. She is the ambassador of the humans to our home in Heaven. Our Lady Theotokos is the unwedded bride. Another bride is the secret Body of our Lord, our Holy Church where we receive through the mysteries, the Divine Grace. Therefore, as members of Christ’s body we are all baptized in the Name of Holy Trinity and we do not have the right to destroy His Church. There is no place for power, authority or carnality. Only faith to the Triune God, trust to Him and thus, obey to the Divine will.
Moreover, the Bishop of Corfu analysed the following verse:”Rejoice, breaker of the webs of the Athenians’ logic”. In ancient times, humans did not have yet receive the Divine Grace, from Christ’s incarnation, they spend their time in endless philosophical conversations, on what is God. As a result, they were led to worshippin idols in an atmosphere of conspiracies and disputes. Even the Athenians were involved in these. This confusion is resolved by the Real Light, our Lord, Jesus Christ through Theotokos.
Even today, our times are equal with the ancient ones, said also his Eminence. The raging efforts of anti-Christ powers try to take off the roots of our faith and hope of our people to Christ. They try to convert the Orthodox Church to an uncoloured and non-religious state, for the sake of multiculturalism. However, all these people try in vain. Our people and especially the young ones overwhwelm our churches because they realise that their only pillar is Christ, Virgin Mary and the Saints.
In his closing, Mr. Nektarios assured the faithful Christians that our Champion General, Lady Theotokos will not abandon our Greece. Our country is kept alive because of her prayers as long as we, on our part, live according to Christ’s commands and keep fighting.
