The celebration of Saint Jason and Sosipater’s memory in the Holy Metropolis of Corfu
On Sunday, April 29, 2018, his Eminence, the Bishop of Corfu, Paxoi and Diapontian Islands, Mr. Nektarios did the Episcopal Divine Liturgy in the celebrating church of Saints Jason and Sosipater.
In his speech, the Bishop of Corfu paralleled the healing of the paralytic, by Jesus Christ, in the Pool of Bethesda, with the work of the Apostles Jason and Sosipater, who declared the true God on the island of the Phaeacians at a time when Corfu was spiritually paralyzed, given to the worship of the Emperor and the idols.
The work of Saints Jason and Sosipater was far from easy, as the Roman authorities imprisoned them. The fruit of the work of the Holy Apostles was the virgin Martyr Kerkyra, the daughter of the ruler of the area Kerkyllinou, and the seven Martyrs, who confessed Christ. The tree of our Faith is watered with the blood of the Martyrs.
Moreover, his Eminence noted that today, unfortunately, there is a wrong impression in our society that the Holy Clergy does not listen to the problems and concerns of the people. On the contrary, the priests and especially the Bishops, constantly pray for the salvation and spiritual advancement of souls, with which the Lord has trusted them. The first concern of the Bishop is not the supply of material goods to the people, but the salvation and union of the flock of the local Church with the Triune God. The Bishops are the followers of the Holy Apostles. Hierarchically considered, charity comes second. Such clarifications are necessary because many of our siblings have misunderstood the role of the Church.
In his conclusion, Mr. Nektarios asked the faithful to do their self-criticism, checking whether the route of their everyday life is consistent with Divine Will. Only Christ’s life makes people truly free.
After the Divine Liturgy, his Eminence welcomed students from a Greek School from Australia, who are in Corfu, guests of the 7th Junior High School of Corfu. The local Church supports this effort of the 7th Junior High School, which takes place every year. Both the Bishop of Corfu and the parishes and monasteries of the island contribute to the warm welcome and staying of the students.
His Eminence expressed his great joy and deep emotion as Greeks from every corner of the world meet, rekindling in this way the flame of the philanthropy that is found in every Greek soul.
Furthermore, Mr. Nektarios asked the students to keep their faith in Christ in their hearts and to study the history of our blessed homeland, especially today where our neighbors are trying to mutilate it territorially.
In spite of all those working for the destruction of Greece, the Greeks claim with one voice the historical truth, against the revisionism of the Skopje and the Turks.
The Bishop of Corfu also gave the students blessings. Finally, it is worth mentioning that the students from Australia visited the Holy Monastery of Paleokastritsa, where they were offered a hospitality meal.
