The feast of Saint Agathi in the Holy Metropolis of Corfu.
On Tuesday, February 5, 2019 His Eminence the Bishop of Corfu, Paxos and Diapontian Islands Mr. Nektarios did the Divine Liturgy in celebrating church of St. Agathe, in the village of Zygos north Corfu.
In his sermon the Bishop Corfu stressed that the Holy Martyr Agatha, who lived in Catania, Sicily, fought the devil, idolatry and sin, by faith in the Triune God. While she was a woman, she was still brave. In the area, where there was a temple dedicated to Poseidon. Today, at the same point, there is a great Christian Basilica, dedicated to St. Agathi.
Referring to the present time, his Eminence pointed out that the power of faith did not apply only in the early Christian centuries, but today. And in our day our enemy, the devil continues and fights God, through the crown of creation of the Lord, that is, through man. The power of evil takes hold and can destroy everything when man is autonomous and departs from Christ.
In other words, when he is spiritually “unfortified”. We see daily the many changes that our society suffers from evil and especially the young generation that drives into drugs and sensuality, naturally because of the spiritual indifference of the larger ones. Belief on the other hand proves to be stronger than this power of evil. Apostle Paul emphasizes that man becomes powerful when he has Christ in his heart.
Moreover, Mr. Nektarios emphasized that our Church is presenting us every day, within the first Christian years, our Saints, in order to take all our cause, to intensify our spiritual struggle and to praise the Lord.
In closing, his Eminence wished the faithful Lord God to give them enlightenment, through the embassies of Saint Agathi.
