The Feast of the Entrance of the Theotokos in the Temple celebrated in Corfu
On Tuesday, November 21, 2017, his Eminence, the Bishop of Corfu, Paxoi and Diapontian Islands, mr. Nektarios made the Divine Liturgy in the Church of Holy Virgin of Eisodia (The Entrance of Theotokos in the Temple) in Sfakera village. The late Bishop of Corfu Sevastianos Nikokavouras (1899-1923) originated from this village.
In his preaching, the Bishop mentioned the great importance of this Feast. The parents of Virgin Mary devoted Her to God by taking Her to the Church of Solomon when she was only three years old. Holy Virgin Mary dwelt in the Temple till she was twelve. During these nine years, she was fed by an Angel and she was spiritually fighting against Temptations. Her birth and her entrance to the Temple had been prophesied long ago, since the Old Testament’s times.
With Her Annunciation, Virgin Mary beard in her womb the Uncontainable One, Jesus Christ and like a new Eve, she acts against the terrible snake. By her consent, Virgin Mary helps in the fulfillment of Jesus Christ, the Son and Word of God as Human. As a result, the guilt that tortured people, the guilt of the
Fall is taken away and the Sky is united with the Earth.
Moreover, the Bishop underlined the fact that Virgin Mary’s life is a real example for us, who live in quite a similar period. Just like then, so happens now. People put God aside and make themselves gods with a constant confusion to occur in every single place of the world. Everything is scorched, temptation and sinning are spreading. The only hope left is the returning to God through repentance. It is high time people pray more and more and fight spiritually more.
In his closing, mr. Nektarios wished that Virgin Mary’s Grace will always protect our Nation, enlighten the new Generation of Greeks who are our future. It is worth noting that after the Divine Liturgy, the Bishop of Corfu went with his associates to the Camping of the Holy Metropolis in Kassiopi, where he oversaw the works that have been carried out since the beginning of autumn. In particular, it is a great renovation work of the local Church, which includes two large buildings, dining rooms, hostels and warehouses, in order for the conditions for the children to be excellent.
The Holy Metropolis hosts around 500 children during the summer. Mr. Nektarios’s first concern is the catechesis of the youth.
