Bishop of Corfu, Mr. Nektarios: “The Holy Communion is the centre of each Christian’s life.”
On Friday, February 2, 2018, his Eminence, the Bishop of Corfu, Paxoi and Diapontian Islands, Mr. Nektarios did the Divine Liturgy in the celebrating Church of the Presentation of Christ in the Temple in the village of Kastellanoi Mesis.
In his speech, his Eminence mentioned that God became Human because of love. Jesus Christ followed the provisions of the Mosaic Law such as the circumcision in the eighth day of birth and the presentation and dedication of the first-born male to the temple of the Solomon on the fortieth day from birth. The dedication of the first-born males was established by Moses, since God unleashed the ten wounds against the Egyptians. The tenth wound was the most terrible, killing the Egyptians first-born males by the Angel. The Jewish people were freed from the slavery of Pharaoh and after their forty- years wandering, they settled in the land of promise.
The Bishop of Corfu also noted that during the day of Christ’s Presentation in the Temple, two people are distinguished. On the one hand, Prophet Anna who when saw Jesus Christ entering the temple, characterized Him as “the salvation of God” demonstrating as Messiah to the people who were in the temple. On the other hand, the holy man Simeon who in the deepest oldness saw Jesus. He took the baby in his arms and blessed the Lord and said: “Lord, now let Your servant go in peace according to Your promise, because my eyes have seen Your salvation which you have prepared before the face of all peoples, a light to bring revelation to the Gentiles, and the glory to your people Israel.”
The righteous Simeon was one of the seventy translators of the Old Testament from Hebrew to Greek. In particular, he translated the prophet Isaiah. As he read the text, “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son” (Isaiah 7, 14), he started having doubts as to whether this could be accomplished. He was ready to delete this phrase. But the Lord’s Angel prevented him from doing this by telling him to translate what he was reading. Simeon’s last doubt disappeared while he was fishing, he threw a ring to the Nile. He thought that if it was true, Isaiah’s prophecy, he could find this ring again. So it happened. The ring was found in a fish that Simeon had fished.
Then, Mr. Nektarios thanked and congratulated the students and the teachers of the school in Kastellanoi Mesis who attended the Divine Liturgy and emphasized that the Holy Communion is the Centre of each Christian’s life where we unite with our Lord and our brothers and sisters by receiving the Holy Communion.
In his closing, his Eminence asked from the students to keep Christ in their hearts, in times where faith, history, values and ideals are demolished by the ones in power for the sake of globalization.
