“The One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church and the religious groups of heresies”
On Sunday evening, November 11, 2018, at the Holy Church of Saint Spyridon the Wonderworker, the afternoon preaching with speaker the Protopresbyter father Evangelos Koutras, responsible of the anti-heretic fight of the Holy Metropolis of Corfu on the following subject: “The One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church and the religious groups of heresies.”
In his speech, father Evangelos underlined that our Orthodoxy has the absolute conviction that the Church is one, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic, is “the Body of Christ” (Eph 1,23) (Acts 12: 27). The Church is the historical Body of Christ, that is, His human nature. Saint Chrysostomos says that “the Christ of the Church took flesh”. The body is visible, structured, organized and defined by the Mysteries. The Church’s characteristics are: a) the historical continuity manifested in the Apostolic succession; and b) Orthodoxy, that is, according to the Bible, “a pillar and the foundation of truth” (1 Timothy 3:15).
Furthermore, Father Evangelos pointed out that Protestantism has devised heretical perceptions. It promotes the Church as divided and the Body of Christ shredded. The younger groups of Pentecostals and other “charismatic devises”, as well as the Jehovah’s Witnesses, either deny the visible Church, accusing it of being mistaken, or even turning into a prostitute! In this way they break, divide, deceive, tear, obscure, and blind the minds of men.
In conclusion, Father Evangelos stressed that today “the salvation outside of the Church is not a feasible option”. In the Orthodox Church, every heretical doctrine and apostasy, every war and every autonomy, means the loss of the goods that the Church gives, that is, the deprivation of salvation and the completion with Christ.
