The Region of the Ionian Islands awards the Archbishop of Albania

On Wednesday, September, 5, 2018, the Region of the Ionian Islands held an event honoring his Beatitude, Archbishop of Tirana and all Albany, Mr. Anastasios, in Achilleion.

Hereby follows the greeting speech of his Eminence, the Bishop of Corfu, Paxoi and Diapontian Islands, Mr. Nektarios in the event:

“It is a great honor for our local Church to participate tonight in this event of honoring, respecting and recognizing the work made by his Beatitude, Archbishop of Tirana, Durres and all Albania, Mr. Anastasios. His Beatitude is originally from the Ionian Islands and thus, continues the Ionian way of life.

The Ionian Greek is on the one hand open to the west culture, the scientific progress and knowledge, dialogue and liberal values, respect of the human face and their right to a quality life and thinking, while at the same time he/she follows the Orthodox Tradition. There, the Ionian Greek can find the desire of freedom, faith to God not as a mere superior power or one expressing a metaphysical reality, but as the incarnated God. He/ She sees Him in every fellow person, in the struggle of love, virtue, humble offering, mobilization of all those who could serve fellow people.

The Ionian Greek follows the road of leading, which does not promote its own self but the one of the other (“ No one should seek their own good, but the good of others.”) as Disciple Paul mentions in the First to Corinthians letter (chapter 10, line 24) and expresses him/herself through an alive relationship with tradition, Saints and the feeling that every Christian starts from asking for the Kindgom of God but promotes justice of God, that is love.

The whole life of his Beatitude, Archbishop of Tirana, Durres and all Albania, Mr. Anastasios constitute an example to imitate not only of an ecclesiastical man and leader, but also as a universal, global Greek, who did not only talk but devoted his existence to light candles to the darkness of our times. He stepped in and inspired. We thank him for being here today with us.

We congratulate the Director of the Region of the Ionian Islands, Mr. Theodoros Galiatsatos, for his initiative to honor his Beatitude, the Archbishop of Tirana, Durres and All Albania, Mr. Anastasios by promoting the ionian Greek way.

We wish that his Beatitude will live a long and happy life. In a time where, the lack of leading is obvious in our homeland and the confusion of how are we going to keep our identity and personality as a nation, combined with out attempt to meet a culture mostly atheistic and nihilistic, the example of his Beatitude, the Archbishop of Tirana, Durres and all Albania, Mr. Anastasios, who is also an Ionian man, continues to lead the way.

We are privileged to have you, Beatitude!”
