The Third Part of the Akathist Hymn and Small Compline in the Holy Metropolis of Corfu
On Friday afternoon, March 29, 2019, his Eminence, the Bishop of Corfu, Paxoi and Diapontian Islands, Mr. Nektarios did the third Part of the Akathist Hymn and Small Compline at the Holy Church of Virgin Mary in Doukades village.
In his speech, his Eminence analysed the verses of the Akathist Hymn: “Eloquent rhetors we see mute as fish before you O Theotokos. For they are at a loss to explain how you had the power to give birth and yet remained a virgin.”It is true that man’s finite mind, as trained as he is with the education of the priest, can not only approach or even palpitate the great Mystery of the Incarnation of the Son and Word of God. Only with faith can one fathom the Virgin’s Eternal Virgin before the birth of His Son and God, at the birth and after the birth.
These ultimate Mysteries of the Triune God cannot be understood by these celestial powers of the Holy Angels and Archangels. In front of all these cosmopolitan events, all the wise humans of the world stand ecstatic and speechless, like fish, and thus their ignorance is evident. Even though they have knowledge of the senses of our world, for the spiritual world, and especially for the Mysteries of God, their ignorance is revealed. Moreover, the ancient Athenians who undoubtedly developed rhetorical art and dialectics, who tried, with their philosophical reason, to reach the first principle of things, even those who were engaged in endless discussions about the so-called “gods,” that were nothing else , rather than the personifications of the passions and the sensuality of the people of the ancient world. Our Lady, therefore, cooperates in the divine plan for the salvation of the human race, thereby breaking the lie and the fallacy of the idols.
In addition, the Bishop of Corfu, referring to the present day, stressed that all these mistakes of the past are unfortunately prevailing. From philosophical discussions, God has been removed, or described falsly. Also several centers try to impose human passions, the sinful condition as a normal way of life in modern society. We see daily, especially from those who are in power, to vote against and unethical bills and sin to be “baptized” right. On the contrary, in Greece, our Church has proven that over the centuries it is the guarantor of the Orthodox faith, the philanthropy and the preservation of the tradition of this place.
In his conclusion, Mr. Nektarios wished the Virgin to protect our nation and to give repentance and illumination to all those who strike the dissolution of our homeland.
