Bishop of Corfu, Mr. Nektarios: “Today we need to have a spirit of bravery and resistance”

On Friday afternoon, July 6 2018, his Eminence, the Bishop of Corfu, Paxoi and Diapontian Islands Mr. Nektarios did the panegyrical Vesper in the Holy Church of Saint Kyriaki in Chriisida.

In his speech, his Eminence having analysed the reading of the Old Testament, in the book of Proverbs, explained that the writer describes the woman who has respect for God, obedience, humbleness, ability to multiply the goods she has in order to help the rest of the people. The aforementioned qualities were given to Saint Kyriaki the Great martyr, who was nurtured in spirit of our Lord by her pious parents, who first followed the marydrom for Christ’s sake.

Saint Kyriaki has been subjected to horrible tortures in order to deny Jesus Christ. But her faith and her love for Christ in her soul was so great that the Lord Himself, as the writer informed us, visited her in prison, empowering her. Saint Kyriaki finally delivered her pure soul to God, giving her example to the faithful over the centuries, that even in the pain of bodily suffering, but also in death, we need to have faith in Jesus Christ, the cause of our existence.

In addition, the Bishop of Corfu described today as a time of contradiction. On the one hand, we see people giving themselves to pleasure and idolatry, and on the other, young people, for the most part, returning to the Church, changing their way of life. On the one hand, we have the poor people and on the other the wealthy ones who show a brutal indifference. This takes place, because there is a spiritual war. Modern humans arecalled upon to fight, having of course the grace of God and never alone, against sin and temptation. And as if all this was not enough, the leaders of our country decided and legislated their devious plans, the sole purpose of which is the disappearance of any resistance of our Nation, which kept it for so many centuries alive, Orthodoxy, the sacred institution of our family, our history and our culture.

In his closing, Mr. Nektarios stressed to the faithful that today we all need to acquire a spirit of bravery and resistance, against the “beast” that has appeared today and is called the New Order of Things.
