Traditional Epitaphs of the Holy Churches in the old town of Corfu
Corfiot Epitaphs do not look like the ones of the other parts of Greece, such as the big wooden carved ones of Epirus, but they are made on Venetian standards. Most of them are gold-plated, in a small shape, where here on the skeleton of Epitaph, a portable image of the the removal of the Body of Christ from the Cross is adapted. Besides these portable icons, the image of the burial of Christ in cloth, as in the rest of the country, has been adapted in recent years. The Corfiot Epitaphs are usually decorated with carnations, are simple in their expression and decorated by the women of the parishes on the evening of Holy Thursday after the Service of the Holy Suffering or early on Holy Friday’s morning.
Here are photos of the Epitaphs of the Holy Temples of the old town of Corfu.
