Bishop of Corfu, Mr. Nektarios: “Virgin Mary is the helper of our Nation.”
On Friday, March 9, 2018 his Eminence, the Bishop of Corfu, Paxoi and Diapontian Islands, Mr. Nektarios did the Akathist Hymn and Small Compline in the Holy Church of Virgin Mary the Eleousa in Potamos.
In his preaching, his Eminence underlined that Virgin Mary is the helper of our Nation throughout the centuries. She is the Defender General by the time of the Eastern Roman Empire, when Constantinople was seized by various enemies. The Emperor and Patriarch along with the people sung this beautiful poem to our Lady of the Sign and the enemies were repelled. When praying to our Virgin Mary, our main enemy of our soul, devil is also repelled.
Moreover, Mr. Nektarios commented on the following verse: “Rejoice, breaker of the webs of the Athenians’ logic; Rejoice, filler of the nets of the fishermen.” Noting that during the era of the philosophers in Athens, corruption was very obvious, stupidity was prevailing along with boast and seeing themselves as Gods. A sign mentioning the Unknown God captured the interest of Saint Paul when he visited Athens to preach the Gospel. He talked about this incarnated God, Jesus Christ to the Athenians, who believed to Him.
In addition, the Bishop of Corfu stressed that our times today are characterized by this corruption, the stupid conversations, the boast, the self-love and making themselves God. We find ourselves in endless philosophical debates, where Christ has been exiled and we do not consider our short earthly life, this period that God gives us to repent, to understand what truth is and return to His embrace. Our Lord is life, resurrection, our only hope. Instead, we prefer the satisfaction of our own will, the ephemera and the pleasures of life. How can this life be characterized, if only insanity? That is why the whole humanity has been handed over to the ruler of this world, led to devastating paths.
In his closing, Mr. Nektarios urged the faithful Christians to have a brave mind, as genuine soldiers of Christ, with a heart that is burning for both Him and his Most- holy Mother.
