Bishop of Corfu: “Virgin Mary saves our Nation throughout the centuries”
On October 28, 2018, the Matin and Divine Liturgy took place in the Holy Metropolitan Church of Virgin Mary the Spilaiotissa, with his Eminence, the Bishop of Corfu, Paxoi and Diapontian Islands, Mr. Nektarios.
His Eminence in his sermon analyzed the Gospel’s Reading of the day, the resurrection of the daughter of the ruler of the synagogue, Jairus and the woman who had had a flow of blood for twelve years, pointing three points. First, Jairus, although he had a very great position, in his despair turns to Christ. So, God also waits for us to turn to Him and to put our pain before Him, having total trust in Him.
Secondly, when the Lord assured the father that his daughter is asleep, the people around him began to teach Him and mock him. And today, unfortunately, there are many such people, who not only have rejected Christ from their lives but are mocking the faithful people and our Church in whole. Everyone is free to believe or not. But he/she has no right to ridicule and despise the faith of millions of Greeks who are the living members of the secret Body of the Lord and have grown up with the plagues of Orthodoxy. Whether they like it or not, the Greek has been lived for many centuries with his Church.
And thirdly, Christ gives life to Jairus’s daughter through resurrection. Christ has given countless times spiritual rebirth to Greeks. Our Lady, the Exalted General, saves our nation over and over from every hostile revolt. The same was done in 1940, where, although numerically much smaller, our army defeated Italian fascism. The faith in Christ and the Most Holy Theotokos still gives power to our nation that is once again threatened by its eastern neighbor, becoming increasingly challenging every day.
In closing, the Bishop of Corfu invited the faithful to return with repentance to the Lord, because no one else can save our country, except the Almighty God, through the embassies of the Most Holy Theotokos.
At the end of the Divine Liturgy, Mr. Nektarios did the Doxology on the national anniversary of 28th October. The celebratory of the day was given by Mrs. Marina Papasotiriou, curator of the National Gallery, an annex of Corfu.
A memorial service was then commenced and a wreath was deposited in the Hero of the City.
Finally, due to bad weather, the established parade did not take place.
